Hip Pin(s)

Here it is Wednesday, and for now Mom will be staying at the hospital.  The orthropaedist had a look at the x-ray and CT scan of Mom's right hip and is very concerned.  It has deterriorated significantly, to the point that he is concerned one funky twisting of her hip or even a small fall will cause it to break.

This weekend he will be able to put a pin(s) in her right hip that will work to prevent any hip fractures.  Here's a few details, I've found online about hip pinning:
  • Once a fracture occurs, it brings with it many potential medical complications that can arise when adults are confined to bed. The goal of treatment is to get patients moving as quickly as possible after surgery. Surgery to pin the broken ends of the fracture together is fairly simple and allows patients to get up and begin moving shortly after surgery.
After this procedure Mom will be scheduled for radiation in London.

The doctor left Mom the option of going home for 24-48 hours or staying until he can perform the hip procedure this weekend.  She is choosing to stay in the hospital because she said she would "kick herself" over and over again if she did something at home that caused it to break.  (For some reason, I found the comment "kick herself" very amusing.  But doesn't that sound like a Mom-ism?)

We'll keep you posted!

  1. Yesterday was Coffee Break and we all prayed for healing. We have a prayer shawl for Jane. Is anyone from this area going up to Owen Sound? Joan and I would love to visit with Jane but only if that works out for all of you. Just let me know please.

  2. Hi Jane and family. I'm so glad you decided to stay till you got the pins put in. My sister was in your situation except she needed pins put in her Femur. The doctors told us also that it's better to be safe then sorry. Recovery is so much longer if you break it. Thanks to your daughter Christine with her updates and her medical facts. We are wishing you all the best with your patience Jane in your time of healing. It must be hard for you to take a step back, when you are such a doer. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers!
