Late this morning we headed to Dr. Luchtefeld to get the low down on the pathology report and follow up care for Kevin. Once we were able to see him, he took a quick look at Kevin's incisions and said they looked great! Then we sat down and began to pommel him with a bunch of different questions. First off we asked what the pathology report said and he told us that the findings were consistent with Crohn's disease. So we asked him if "consistent with" meant "it is" and he said that that was correct. So while we digested what that meant, we quickly began to fire other questions at him. (We had been doing some research on Crohn's so we would know what questions to ask.)
So here's what we know Crohn's means for Kevin:
- that he's probably had some of this inflammation for years but we didn't realize it
- that Kevin has the kind of Crohn's disease that fistulizes vs. the stenotic kind (narrowing of the intestine)
- that we will be following up Kevin's care with a GI (Gastroenterologist) doctor in about a year
- that in about a year, he'll probably have another colonoscopy but then will spread those out to every 5 years
- that as of now, Kevin may eat what he enjoys and feels comfortable to him
- that he will not be taking any medications - that may change in a year
- that our children have only a 7% chance of having Crohn's as well (we thought it was more like 20% so this a huge relief)
So unless things change drastically this will probably be one of the last updates I post on our blog concerning Kevin's condition for a long time. Because as Kevin likes to quote from one of his favorite speakers "It doesn't matter. Doesn't Matter. Doesn't Matter. Doesn't Matter. Doesn't Matter. DOESN'T MATTER!" We have decided that we are going to live our family motto to the fullest, "Life's a journey, ENJOY the journey." We aren't going to let this drag us down into a pit of "Whoa is us" but rather we are going to use it as another reason to live life to the fullest as God intended by Loving and Laughing as much as we can.
So thank-you to all of you for your cards, meals, hugs and most of all prayers. We cherish you deeply!
Hugs & "Adieu",
Christine (& Kevin)

have the best of everything;
they just make the best of everything they have."
Glad to hear everything will be returning to normal (for the most part)!
