Last night we attempted to describe, in a very basic way, what a colonscopy is to Noah, Gideon and Tristan. Their faces were priceless! And while we knew that Kevin was scheduled to have a colonscopy, we really didn't know the purpose of it until this morning. They were looking for any evidence of further fistulas. His procedure was scheduled to begin at 11:30am but didn't start until 12:15pm or so due to Dr. Luchtefeld's hectic schedule. Since it was running late, I had the priviledge of being with him in the prep area as well as the procedure room. It was comforting to me to see exactly where he would be when he would be "knocked out". However, after talking to the nurse, we discovered that you actually don't have to be under conscious sedation for a colonoscopy. So Kevin, being the Superman he is, opted out of anesthesia and was able to watch on the screen exactly what Dr. Luchteveld was seeing. He said his discomfort went from a 0.5 out of 10 to a 2 out of 10.
Once back in the recovery room, Dr. Luchtefeld explained that they did come across one area of concern that they did not know about earlier. There seems to be some evidence of a possible fistula in the last portion of his decending colon as well, however, it didn't seem to look like cancer or Crohn's while the area in the first portion of his ascending colon did resemble Crohn's. (He did take a biopsy of this area but we are not sure if the results will be in before the surgery tomorrow.)
At this point, we continue to pray that it is not Crohn's disease and that the spot in his decending colon is not a fistula and can be repaired with it's removal and just a few stitches.
Hugs,
Christine (& Kevin)
This is why the nurses love him so much!! (Picture of Kevin at his bladder biopsy)
That is our Kevin. Hope and pray all is going well.
